The Portland Oregon Temple

So here I am, standing in the rain, trying to photograph the Portland Temple. But when you live in the Pacific Northwest, whatever you intend to do, you expect to do it in the rain.

Portland Oregon Temple

Ah, that's better. The Portland temple ranks right up there with San Diego in fascinating architecture.

The Portland Temple Portland Oregon Temple

Until very recently, the Portland Temple was the only one I have seen the inside of. Before it was dedicated in 1989, I took the tour of the inside; it is as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside. I am sure this is true of all the temples.

Tours of the building are given only until the Temple is dedicated; it is not dedicated until it is paid for. After the dedication, only members of the church are allowed access, and then only for ceremonial purposes.

Since then I toured the Columbia River Washington Temple and the Nauvoo Illinois Temple open houses.

Visitors are not permitted to take photos inside the temples, so I don't have any interior shots. However, the LDS website does have interior shots of some of the temples, and also has some video.

All of the photos on this Web site were taken by me; I have no connection with the LDS church, and my interest in the temples is as photographic subjects. "Why do you photograph Mormon temples when you're not a Mormon?" I often get asked. "Why do people photograph cathedrals when they are not Catholic, Lutheran, or Anglican?" I reply. "Same thing."
