Great Basin National Park

As you drive west across the desert of Utah on US 50, you see the small range of mountains in the distance, but it is not particularly impressive. Just one of a myriad of ranges in that part of the country.

Great Basin from high up in the park

Driving up the park road you look down to see the desert stretched out far below you. The green area at the right is the little town of Baker at the park entrance.

At 8,000 feet, Mt. Wheeler, the glory of the park, thrusts skyward another 5,000 feet from our vantage point. The height and grandeur of this mountain is truly an unexpected treat.

Great Basin National Park

In 2002 I visited Great Basin National Park again. It was a clear day, and I was able to capture the peak of Mt. Wheeler with blue sky in the background.
