Up and Down the Bear Creek Greenway
ASHLAND: The improvements at the trailhead area and the last bit of paving will be done by Ashland Parks and Recreation this summer and fall. Ashland Parks patrols have started on the Ashland segment of the Greenway trail.
Further upstream at North Mountain Park on the greenway, Ashland Parks have initiated an Environmental Stewardship Program to operate from the old farmhouse on North Mountain Avenue. Call Kari Tuck, Linda Chesney, or Paige Prewitt at 488-5340 about their plans and activities.
The Bear Creek Greenway Foundation will be working with teachers and students from Ashland High School to update the trail guide with a new section for the two new miles of trail in Ashland. Should any Greenway Foundation members wish to be mentors of students, call Tom Foster at 482-5837.
TALENT: Flood repairs to trail and bridges are complete except for repaving the trail from Suncrest Road to West Valley View Road, which should happen this summer.
Bear Creek Cleanup Day on May 22, 1999 was a success in Lynn Newbry Park. For more information on Talent Parks plans on the greenway call Parks Commission Chair, Cheryl Nadler Voss, at 535-3532.
PHOENIX: The Bear Creek Watershed Education Partners gathered for the 4th Annual Bear Creek Watershed Education Symposium at the Phoenix Elementary School on a Saturday morning, April 24, 1999. Students and teachers shared their projects in the watershed. Call Dave Jacob or Beth Franklin at 664-6676 ext.245, to get involved with next year's event.
The City of Phoenix continues to plan park improvements and wetland restoration on its park on the greenway. To help, call Parks Commission Chair Darrell Paxson to help at 535-1955.
MEDFORD: The City of Medford will see additions to Bear Creek Park in a skateboard park near the fire station. The city has committed $100,000 in matching funds to extending the greenway trail south from Barnett Road.
Medford's citywide vision process has identified the Bear Creek Greenway as a central aspect of the community's quality of life. For more information on activities in Medford Parks along the greenway, call 774-2400.
CENTRAL POINT: Crater High School's Rogue Ecosystems "land lab" on the greenway is almost done with flood repairs and new wetland development started after the 1997 flood.
