SEVENTY-FIVE PERCENT of the earth's surface is covered by sedimentary rock. Conglomerate, the rock underlying this stretch of the creek, is a type of sedimentary rock composed of larger, more rounded rocks cemented together with sand or mud in between. How the rock fragments are sorted or packed in the conglomerate offers clues to how or when it was laid down. The rocks from this conglomerate were first deposited by rivers from the ancient Siskiyous, beginning about 37 million years ago, more or less.

Weeping willow (Salix sp.), one of which can be seen along this section of the Greenway, originated in China, where it provided the inspiration for Blue Willow chinaware.
