Broken Top

Broken Top

Broken Top, seen here from the southwest, is, at 9,152 feet, the eighth highest of the Cascade Peaks in Oregon, and the nineteenth highest in the Cascades as a whole. This is a mid-summer shot.

But from this direction, you can't really see why it is called Broken Top.

Broken Top

This shot was taken in the month of May from Highway 97, southeast of Broken Top (the peak on the right; the one on the left is Mount Bachelor) about 20 miles. Aha, not too cloudy. I can get it. So I turned off at Sunriver, hurried as fast as Oregon's s-l-o-w speed limit would let me, and got to Mount Bachelor, where you can sometimes get a good view of Broken Top. But. . . by then it had clouded over. This is the best I could do. Better luck next time.

Broken Top

Finally! From approximately the same spot as the photo just above, only on a clearer day. Now you know why it is called Broken Top.
