Oregon
In Salem, "The Pioneer" graces the dome on the Oregon State Capitol building. You can judge the height of the statue by the head and shoulders of the man standing at its base.
This is Oregon's third capitol building. The first was built of wood; it burned early in the 20th century. The second was also built of wood; it burned in the mid-1930's. The third, built in the late 1930's, is fire-proof. It is of art nouveau design and features pioneer murals inside and out.
 | You may buy the State Capitols CD, which has on it all of the State Capitols photos on this site, plus about a hundred more -- over 225 altogether -- in a larger size, suitable for viewing full screen or printing your own enlargements. Sample photo. |
